As some of you may be aware, one of our drivers was recently involved in an incident on a smart motorway. However, since this, Highways England got in touch with us to discuss smart motorways. Firstly, they ensured that Julie (our driver) was safe and well. Secondly, they wanted to work with us to obtain our views and suggestions regarding Smart Motorways.
Highways England also provided us with information so we can help debunk some of the myths about Smart Motorways.
- The number of miles driven on motorways in England has increased by 23% since 2000.
- Smart motorways have raised the capacity of our busiest motorways by up to a third.
- A smart motorway can carry 1,600 additional vehicles an hour in each direction, enabling an additional 11,000 journeys a day.
- Red ‘X’ violations can land you with 3 points on your licence and a £100 fine.

When normality is restored, Highways England have invited us to visit their National Traffic Operations Centre (NTOC) to see how they operate. This is a fantastic chance for us here at JJX to understand more about England’s Highways. We are very grateful to have this opportunity.
In the meantime, we are making efforts to educate ourselves, our drivers and the public. As drivers, we are all responsible for the way we drive and making the road a safe place to be.
By working with Highways England, we have received educational material to provide some in-house training regarding smart motorways. If you would like this information please get in touch with SPTC_Driver_Education_Course@highwaysengland.co.uk
We will also be sharing Highways England videos and information with regards to driving safely. Keep your eyes peeled for more information to come.
Mark Byard, Health, Safety and Wellbeing Director at Highways England, said “we appreciate the importance of the work undertaken by logistics operators in keeping shelves stocked and the country supplied. The Strategic Road Network plays a significant part in keeping these operations moving and with safety being our priority, we’re keen to support this sector”.
